They waited in Moçamedes for a while until the transportation arrived to take them to Lubango. Transportation in those days was provided by "carros boers" a type of American wagon introduced by the Boers in South Africa. The boer wagons were much larger than their American counterpart and could carry heavier loads.

Depending on the load, each wagon would be pulled by up to twenty oxen. Several spare animals would be part of the wagon, the same way we need to carry spare tires when today we go on a long trip.

A boer wagon could carry 30 bags of corn or wheat weighting approximately three tonnes. After the boer wagons were loaded with all personal belongings, seeds and tools to build the settlement, there was only enough space for the women and little children in the wagons. Men and older children would walk alongside.

The travelling party included the 55 families that came from Madeira, 50 natives, 100 horses, 2000 heads of cattle, 500 sheep and 60 dogs. One can imagine what good fun it would have been for the children to be able to run free in such an immense place were everything was new, vast and so different from Madeira Island.

And how frightening it must have been for the parents coming to grips with strange wild animals, people of black colour and the strange language which was spoken.
